This past weekend I was incredibly blessed to take part in doula training sponsored by
Birthwell Partners Community Doula Project in Birmingham, AL and facilitated by
Mother's Care Doula Services in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. The intensive 3 day training covered everything from the basics of child birth education -- anatomy, physiology, nutrition, etc. -- to comfort measures like aromatherapy, massage, meditation and visualization. It was not only educational, but also incredibly spiritual and empowering.
I'm so excited to begin this journey. I'm especially excited to be volunteering with
Birthwell Community Doula Project in Birmingham to help provide doulas to underserved mothers -- including teens who may not otherwise have much support. I'm not sure where this is going to take me, but I have already learned so much, and I'm ready to continue my studies in birth and lactation education.
I'm sure many people are wondering what exactly a doula is. In a nut shell, a doula is someone who provides continuos emotional, physical and informational support before and during labor. A doula can help bridge the gap between the pregnant woman and her healthcare provider. A doula is an advocate for the mother, and helps her have the best birth possible. For more information, click
