I may be a hippie... I own cloth diapers

First things first -- if I am a hippie I'm not a very good one. I eat meat. I don't wear tie-dye. I kinda love T.V. I am a terrible gardener. And I really don't like jam bands.

When my son was born earlier this year I discovered the world of attachment parenting and those darn hippies lured me in with their baby-centered ways -- breastfeeding, co-sleeping and babywearing. And once you drink the Kool-aid, you're just a hop, skip and a jump away from only eating organic, composting and wearing hemp jewelry. Then there is the ultimate in hippie mothering -- the cloth diaper. I recently purchased my first cloth diapers but haven't tried them out yet. I'll let you know how that plays out. I even surprised myself with that one. My family's just glad I'm still wearing deodorant.

Luckily my foray into green living seems to be coinciding nicely with my obsession with saving money. I am the thriftiest person I know. I have a small budget and a big coupon binder. And what could be cheaper than breastfeeding, cloth diapers and growing your own vegetables? If I entered this kid in pageants I could actually make money off him. (I'm only joking. I promise, son, no kiddie pageants.)

But right now, I'm living in a world in between. I love natural parenting, but I circumcised and vaccinated. I adore our baltic amber teething necklace, but I'm not scared to reach for the baby dropper of ibuprofen. I can't wait to get the old-fashioned natural wood toys I ordered for kiddo for Chrismas, but I love to watch him play on his plastic Fisher-Price workbench. So I eat steak, but I also eat granola.
